URBAN ATLAS QUESTION. Can someone help? I have downloaded shape files for a small number of cities from the excellent urban atlas (http://www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/data/urban-atlas). I want to use them to produce some simple comparative statistics for the cities (e.g. comparing the % of land within certain boundaries that are used for different purposes). However, when I open the shape files within ArcMap (version 10.1) the coordinate system is undefined. Thus, although I can see the data, I can't analyse it in relation to other boundaries/GIS data.

The meta data online says it does have a coordinate system but clearly ArcMap can't read it.

Can anyone help with this?

Thanks very much

Dear dwalsh,
According to the EEA data policy (http://www.eea.europa.eu/legal/eea-data-policy) we need to provide data compliant with open software standards, therefore we provide the datasets with an OGC compliant .prj file.
As ESRI arcMAP, in this case, is not in line with the OGC standards, please use the ESRI friendly prj file you can find here:

Best regards
