Hey, I'm starting an art work that would need to access some environmental data (air, water pollution in the given city where it's currently located). I see that the EEA has some API information, and a lot of datasets. However, I'm at a complete loss as to how to get further.

I have a tiny bit of experience with other APIs, and can for example get the weather, latitude, etc of X or Z city in my programming, but the EEA stuff seems much bigger. Any tips on where to start would be greatly appreciated!

Dear M. Mathieu L.,

Thank you for contacting the European Environment Agency (EEA).
We would suggest you to have a look at the following gateways and indexes, that may help you retrieve environmental data on air and water quality:

- The Water Information System for Europe – or more commonly known as WISE – is a gateway to information on European water issues. It comprises a wide range of of data and information collected by EU institutions to serve several stakeholders. Please access it at https://water.europa.eu/freshwater.

- The EEA European Air Quality Index allows users to understand more about air quality where they live. Displaying up-to-the-minute data for the whole of Europe, users can gain new insights into the air quality of individual countries, regions and cities. Please access it at https://airindex.eea.europa.eu/. You may also find key air quality statistics for the main air pollutants at:

We hope that this may be useful for you.

With kind regards,
EEA Enquiry Service

Thank you for the information. I have been taking a look at several of these datasets and found several things I would like to use.

Is there a clear reference to how to use the API to access this information from a node.js in real-time? For example that when the piece is performed in X city, through the node.js I would look at several different air pollutants levels? An example of queries and such for any one of these datasets would help, such as the one here from NASA as an example: https://ssd-api.jpl.nasa.gov/doc/cad.html

Thanks a lot for your help and information!

Dear M. Mathieu L.,

Thank you for your patience.

After consulting with the experts in the field, we are sorry to inform you that we do not possess an API as the NASA site you are referring to. The best option for accessing up-to-date air quality data is the option described at this page under ‘Direct downloads’: http://discomap.eea.europa.eu/[…]/AirQualityUTDexport.htm.

We hope that this may be useful for you.
