Hello,

I have downloaded the following document from your website:

Bathing Water Directive - Status 1990 - 2010

It is a series of spreadsheets organized per country, showing the bathing water status from 1991 to 2010. I am studying Denmark in particular, year 1991, 1995, 2000 and 2010. I have noticed that there are no CG - Compliance with Guide values for the year of 1991 in the entire country. As a result, I am wondering if the same standards were used in the 1991 report as in the other years - since lack of any CGs seems improbable.

Thanks.

Dear nk,
as you have already studied the information that we are providing and as you are focussed on Denmark I highly recommend to contact the relevant danish authorities. At the home page of the Danish Nature Agency, www.naturstyrelsen.dk you can find general information about bathing water and contact details. Most of the local authorities in Denmark have a home page with bathing water information.

Thanks for the link. But the question I am asking concerns your data set. Has the standard for testing water changed from 1991 to 1995 as per your excel worksheet under Bathing Water DIrective- STATUS 1990-2010?
Thanks.

Dear nk,
thanks for pointing this out. We are currently checking if the changes are due to changed sampling within the countries or issues on our data. We will get back to you as soon as we have a result.

Dear nk,
We suggest to take a look at the methodology for assessment of bathing water quality. It is available in the annual National Bathing Water Reports and European Bathing Water Report (please see http://www.eea.europa.eu/[…]/quality-of-bathing-water-2010; Box 2.2, page 9). More detailed explanation is given in the Guidelines on assessment under the New Bathing Water Directive and transition period and its references, available at
http://eea.eionet.europa.eu/[…]/_EN_1.0_&a=d

The bathing water quality for Denmark was assessed under the Directive 76/160/EEC (old bathing water directive) from 1991 to 2007. In the 2008 season Denmark started reporting under the Directive 2006/7/EC (new bathing water directive). The assessment of bathing water quality according to transition period rules was done from 2008 to 2010 season. The assessment under the Directive 2006/7/EC will be done for the first time in the 2011 season since four years of data will be available.

The official results of bathing water quality on country level for all the previous bathing seasons are available in annual national bathing water reports. We do not know why only one bathing water of Denmark was compliant with guide values of the Directive 76/160/EEC in 1991. This might be explained by the Danish authorities or the European Commission. EEA and its European Topic Center (Inland, Coastal and Marine Water) produced the annual bathing water reports only from the 2008 bathing season onwards.

We suggest to ask national and/or local authorities what factors could contribute to the decline in bathing water quality in the Oresund region in the year 2010.
