I wonder if there are any objectives on a European level in relation to waste prevention? For example, the amounts of waste shall decrease by a certain percentage until a specific year.

Hi Nils,

Currently, the EU does not have quantified targets on waste prevention. EU Member States have an obligation to produce waste prevention programmes, and several countries have set waste prevention targets. For a description of the policy context on waste prevention, and on information on targets set by Member States in their waste prevention programmes, I refer to our 2015 edition of the waste prevention report: https://www.eea.europa.eu/[…]/waste-prevention-in-europe-2015. (note: there is also a 2016 edition of the report, but this one focusses on hazardous waste prevention only).

The European Parliament, in its vote on the on-going revision of the 2008 Waste Framework Directive within the 2015 Circular economy package, has voted for an amendment that would set (semi) quantified waste prevention objectives/targets. This can be found here: http://www.europarl.europa.eu/[…]/EN&language=EN.

I will send a copy of the reply to your email.

Kind regards
