Dear George,

Thank you for your interest in the European Environment Agency (EEA).

EU member states, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Turkey, report on hazardous waste generation and treatment to Eurostat every two years, according to the Waste Statistics Regulation (EC 2150/2002). The dataset covers waste generation and final treatment. ‘Waste management’ is a broader, more general term that covers other aspects too, such as sorting and pre-treatment, which are not reflected in the Eurostat dataset.

A good visualisation for data availability can be seen in figure 2.4 in the EEA report ‘Prevention of hazardous waste in Europe’ (EEA report no. 35/2016, https://www.eea.europa.eu/[…]/waste-prevention-in-europe).

Countries also need to report on imports and exports of hazardous waste along with the final treatment these receive, according to the Waste Shipment Regulation (EC 1013/2006). Eurostat also hosts this dataset.

Based on different pieces of legislation, countries also need to report on specific hazardous waste streams, such as WEEE (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment) and batteries.

Here are relevant links to Eurostat's waste generation and treatment database:
