Hi there. I work for a professional beach cleaning company and am currently facing an investor question regarding market size of marine litter in European oceans. I cannot seem to find this statistic anywhere. I am aware of the estimated 150 million global tonnes, and am also aware of the data regarding how much marine litter is entering ocean annually. However, does the EEA have a current estimate of much marine litter and/or plastic is actually in European oceans? Additionally, does the EEA have data specifically regarding Grecian Seas (Ionian, Aegean, Crete)?

Many thanks,
Olivia

Dear Ms. Olivia Clare,

Thank you for contacting the European Environment Agency (EEA).

You might be interested in consulting the EEA Marine litter Watch that has collected beach litter data for 6 years at https://www.eea.europa.eu/[…]/marine-litterwatch-data-viewer . This dataset also covers the Grecian seas.

You could also have a look at the data from the 'European Marine Observation and Data Network'. It has produced maps showing the extent of marine litter in EU seas including an overall distribution of seafloor litter per MSFD regions. Please see:

- http://www.emodnet.eu/emodn[…]ter-data-maps-first-release

Last but not least, the EEA does not make estimations of inputs and existing marine litter amounts in European seas.

We hope that this information may be useful for you.
