Hi! I am looking for data on existing coal plants (hard coal and lignite) in Europe. Does the EEA or any other EU body maintain a dataset on coal plants in operation? Specifically, I am looking for information about the expected closure of plants due to the LCP Directive and IE Directive. Any help would be highly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Dear ejb,
sorry for the very late reply. Unfortunately EEA doesn't have a list of dates when plants are expected to retire and we are not aware of any such list at the EU level. But for a subset of older large combustion plants, (solid, liquid or gaseous fuelled) we do have information on the planned number of operational hours remaining. These plants, known as opt-out plants, were exempted from compliance with the emission limit values set out in the LCP Directive and from their inclusion in the national emission reduction plans under certain conditions. In order to be eligible for such "opt out", the operator of the plant had to undertake, in a written declaration to the competent authority, not to operate the plant for more than 20 000 operational hours starting from 1 January 2008 and ending no later than 31 December 2015.

You can find the list of opt-outs and remaining hours at http://www.eea.europa.eu/da[…]4-of-directive-2001-80-ec-1

You may also wish to contact the European Commission with your enquiry, as we are aware they have been having some discussions with countries concerning the opt-out plants and may have more recent information: env-ied-info@ec.europa.eu

The EEA also publishes a second dataset of operational LCP plants that includes their level of emissions of certain pollutants and fuel statistics. You can find this here: http://www.eea.europa.eu/da[…]red-by-directive-2001-80-ec Unfortunately however this dataset is a little old now and covers just 2004-2006. For your further information, we have also recently received updated information covering 2007-2009 which is now being prepared for publication.

Hope that helps.
