Dear Sirs.

I'm Fred, from Brazil. I'm a masters' degree student of University of São Paulo and my research is about energy recovery in urban wastewater treatment plants (WTP).

I'm writing you because I'd like to know if you have recent European data on the use of biogas obtained from anaerobic digestion of sewage ou sewage sludge (from urban wastewater).

By "use" I mean heating, electricity generation, vehicle fueling etc.

I wonder if you have such data and if you could share it with me.

Thank you for your attention!

Dear M. Fred Filho,

Thank you for contacting the European Environment Agency (EEA).

Unfortunately, we are not able to provide you with recent EU data on the use of biogas (for heating - electricity or fuel for vehicles) obtained from anaerobic digestion of sewage or sewage sludge at this moment. Please note that an EEA technical report on Urban Wastewater is nevertheless in the pipeline for this year and will be published on our website once finalised.

In the meantime, we may suggest you to consult the following reports or datasets:

- EEA publication on ‘Biological treatment of waste – anaerobic digestion at biogas facilities’ (2016)[…]/5-b-2-biological-treatment)
- DG ENER database on biomass with data on GHG emissions and savings:
- EU report on the ‘Optimal use of biogas from waste streams’[…]eyond_2020_final_report.pdf
- H2020 project ‘EnerWater’

Please note that the European Commission’s evaluation of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive will be made public in due course via the following link:[…]/index_en.html and that you may also contact DG Energy directly through their online form: for further information.

We wish you all the best in your research.

With kind regards,
