Hello. How are you?
First of all, I wish that your family and friends as well as yourself are well in these tough days that we are all living because of the COVID-19 virus.
My name is Jesús Lucindo, I’m a PhD student in Economics at University of Zaragoza (Spain). My research is about environmental issues.
I have a question that I hope you can help me solve it. Thank you.
Based on the accounting framework IPCC-CRF about the GHG emissions. I would need to identify which activities correspond to sectors of the direct and diffuse (indirect) emissions.
I have looked for everywhere for this classification, but I have not obtained it.
I would appreciate your help.
Thank you in advance.

Dear M. Jesús Lucindo,

Thank you for contacting the European Environment Agency (EEA).

The reporting of GHG emissions in GHG inventories follows the UNFCCC Reporting Guidelines (UNFCCC Decision 24/CP.19) and the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for the methods. You can find the chapter about indirect emissions from air pollutants at the following link: https://www.ipcc-nggip.iges.or.jp/[…]/V1_7_Ch7_Precursors_Indirect.pdf . This information is reflected in the CRF table 6.

Is this information what you were looking for? Otherwise, please don't hesitate to get back to us and please kindly clarify your question by giving us an example.

With kind regards,

Thank you very much for your quick reply.
After carefully reviewing the indicated documentation, it´s not exactly what I asked in my query. I'm sorry I shouldn't have explained it well.
Based on the accounting framework IPCC-CRF about the GHG emissions. Please, you see table 8.2 at the following link of the working group TFI inside IPCC.
I would need to identify which category or subcategory codes correspond to direct and diffuse (indirect) sectors of emissions.
As far as I know the main difference between both it is the intensity in the use of energy. The instrument used to meet the emission reduction target, for the direct sectors is the ETS (European Trading System) and for the diffuse sectors is the ESD (Effort Sharing Decision).
This time, I hope I have explained myself better
I would appreciate your help.
Thank you in advance.

Dear M. Jesus Lucindo,

Thank you for clarifying your request.

There is no specific mapping as such. Nevertheless, the Trends and Projections report 2018, published by the EEA, contains an Annex 1 with the ESD emissions broken down by CRF/IPCC category at an aggregated level. You might be interested in consulting table A 1.1 of the report: https://www.eea.europa.eu/p[…]ope-2018-climate-and-energy

This information (i.e. ESD emissions by sector) will be published again in the autumn this year, as part of the ETC/CME Effort Sharing trends report. Please monitor our website or subscribe to our news feeds to be kept informed on certain topics and publications' releases. Please see: https://www.eea.europa.eu/[…]/targeted-subscription

Finally, there is also a table in the NIR of the EU's GHG inventory submission to UNFCCC which shows the mapping between the EU ETS activities and the more detailed CRF categories. This may also be useful, even though there is no attempt to quantify the emissions of ETS for each of these CRF categories. Please consult 'Table 1.10 Mapping table outlining the correspondence of CRF categories related to the EU ETS activities' at https://www.eea.europa.eu/p[…]eenhouse-gas-inventory-2020

We hope that this may be useful for you.

One more time, thank you very much for your quick reply.
Your before answer, it is just what I needed to advance with my research. Thanks. (^-^)
I really appreciate your help to answer my queries.
I have one last question.
I would need the database for the period 1990-2018 (up to the most recent year possible) with GHG emissions data according to framework IPCC-CRF for each EU country (if you collect data from any other country outside of the UE, also I would like). I suppose the data source are the National Emission Inventories.
Two comments, if it´s possible for such data which will be extremely useful for my research.
(1) As regard the GHG emissions data more breakdown is better for me. For example, such data according to "IPCC_CLASS" is better than "IPCC_SECTOR".
"IPCC_SECTOR" (- zoom) >> "IPCC_DIVISION" >> "IPCC_CLASS" (+ zoom)
(2) Do you have these data below the administrative Country level?. In other words, do you have it at Region level?. Eurostat cites it as NUTS classification.
I hope this is my last request for help (thanks a lot for all the help above).
Thank you in advance.

Dear M. Jesus Lucindo,

The CRF tables for the period 1990-2018 are available at the following link:
https://www.eea.europa.eu/[…]/view . We unfortunately do not possess GHG emissions data at regional or local levels. We can only suggest the following activities, which might be able to support you in your search:
• The EU Covenant of Majors: https://www.covenantofmayors.eu/support/faq.html
• The EU ETS transaction log, with info on emissions by installation https://ec.europa.eu/clima/ets/

We wish you all the best in your research.

Alright. Thanks a lot. One last thing.
The national GHG emissions data for each EU country for the period 1990-2018 appear next following link. Is this correct?.
Thank you in advance.

Dear Jesus Lucindo,

At the link that you mention above, you will indeed find the official GHG emissions and removals data reported by EU Member States to UNFCCC and the EU Greenhouse Gas Monitoring Mechanism.
