Where can I find statistics on cigarette butt litter in Europe? E.g. a prediction for 2019, or statistics from 2018?

Dear M. 'thealtruistictraveller',

Thank you for contacting the European Environment Agency (EEA).

Even though the EEA recognises that cigarette butt litter is a major concern, this is not a field that has been highly investigated internally. We are then not in a position to provide you with specific information on this topic. We may suggest you to contact the Municipality of Copenhagen, which has done a study on street cleaning, including for cigarette butts and thus may have some information of use to your research.

You may also wish to note the press release taken from the Council of the EU website, which provides information on tobacco product filters under the Single Use Plastics Proposal: https://www.consilium.europ[…]-agreement-with-parliament. According to the press release, producers of tobacco filters, which contain plastic, will be subject to an extended producer responsibility scheme. This means that producers are obliged to cover costs of waste management for tobacco product filters and support awareness-raising measures.

Finally, should your interest lie in Marine Litter and in the EEA Marine Litter Watch, please visit the following page: https://www.eea.europa.eu/[…]/how and https://www.eea.europa.eu/publications/marine-litter-watch.

We hope that this information may be useful for you and wish you all the best in your research.

With kind regards,
EEA Enquiry Service
