The EEA aims to support the development and implementation of sound environmental policies in the EU and other EEA member countries by delivering timely, targeted, relevant and reliable information to policy-makers and the public. This is done to assist the European Community in its attempt to improve the environment and move towards sustainability in Europe. The overall aim of EEA activities is outlined in the EEA Strategy 2009-2013 - Multi-annual Work Programme. EEA activities are further specified in the Annual Management Plan 2010.The legal basis of the EEA is to be found in the EEA regulation http://www.eea.europa.eu/documents/mandate.html

To accomplish its aim, the EEA collects information through EIONET (the European Environmental Information and Observation Network: http://www.eionet.europa.eu/ ) EIONET is a network of environmental bodies and institutions active in the EEA member countries: http://www.eionet.europa.eu/countries.html. It is made up of national focal points (NFPs), national reference centres (NRCs) and European topic centres (ETCs) http://www.eionet.europa.eu/topics.html).
