I am a student doing a research on the relationship between Montenegro and EU. I want to answer how EU is helping Montenegro reach sustainable waste management, good nature protection and water quality. I have only found a report from 2011 on Montenegros water quality, and I am wondering if there is any newer report on this? If not, is it possible that it exist somewhere else? In that case, where?

Both water, nature and waste is in my interest of course. If you have any new reports on Montenegro progress in these areas, I would very much appreciate if I could receive them. Thank you in advance.

Dear M. Bihhaj,

Please read below the information that we could gather on the topics that you raised.

As regards Bathing Water Results in Montenegro, we unfortunately do not possess any data beyond the 2011 data that are presented in the following report: https://www.eea.europa.eu/[…]/view.

On the topic of Nature and Biodiversity, you might find it interesting to know that Montenegro reported their nationally designated protected areas in 2018 under the EU inventory of nationally designated areas and these can be accessed via the following link: https://www.eea.europa.eu/d[…]ted-areas-national-cdda-13. In addition, you can see the progress made with regards to the national designation of protected areas as a tool for biodiversity conservation under https://www.eea.europa.eu/[…]/assessment. In particular, Figure 4 contains information on Montenegro.

You might also want to look at Montenegro’s 5th national report to UN convention on biodiversity convention at https://www.cbd.int/doc/world/me/me-nr-05-en.pdf. Note that the 6th national report is in preparation but as the EEA is not involved in this activity, we cannot be more precise as regards the delivery date.

Last but not least, we would like to point out the following report on Protected areas: https://www.eea.europa.eu/[…]/protected-areas-in-europe-2012

On the topic of Waste Management, as Montenegro does not report to Eurostat on waste, it is not included in the EEA indicators but some data were included in SOER2015 (https://www.eea.europa.eu/[…]/waste) and the following report on West Balkans includes a section on waste: https://www.eea.europa.eu/publications/western-balkans.

For further information on Montenegro’s state of environment, you may contact the Environmental Protection Agency of Montenegro and our National Focal Point:
