Hi team,

I am trying to get air quality time series for specific German cities for CO/Co2, So2, and NO2. As such, I was wondering if:
1) there is a way to use API (something like here http://discomap.eea.europa.eu/[…]/AirQualityUTDExport.htm but the one that goes back to 2013 and not only past 7 days)
2) if there is no way to do so, how can I embed several stations and pollutants to the URL code here? http://discomap.eea.europa.eu/map/fme/AirQualityExport.htm
3) Finally, when I try to get data for Munich in the 2) link, the server is unresponsive and instead of München it puts M%C3%BCnchen to the URL. I tried to manually amend it for München / Munchen / Munich but it does not seem to work.

Many thanks,

Dear Ms. A. Averina,

Thank you for contacting the European Environment Agency (EEA).

To access historic data, we would recommend you to use: http://discomap.eea.europa.eu/map/fme/AirQualityExport.htm

Using the CityName parameter may sometimes be a little delicate because of character encoding, for München this URL appears to work (all pollutants from München between 2013 and 2019). Please see:

Note that both the Station and the Samplingpoint parameter only works with one specific station/samplingpoint. You cannot specify more than one, so you will need to split the different requests.

We hope that this may be useful for you.

With kind regards,

Hi team,

Many thanks for your clarifications.

I was wondering if you could provide some further assistance with the following:

1) I still did not understand if it is possible to enlarge the timeline in the API, e.g. if it is possible to get more than past 3 days of data. Currently I found a way to get data up until 15th February 2020 via historic download form so there is a gap between the historic data end date and API beginning date. So the data between 15th Feb and today()-3days is non downloadable

2) In the historic downloads, I came across a couple of problems with missing data: Hamburg CO data in 2019, any Leipzig CO data, Augsburg SO2 data from 2019 onwards, Munich SO2 data from 2019 onwards, any Dresden CO, Wolfsburg SO2 data for 2019, Berlin NO2 data for 2020. Could you please advice if there is a way to get that data? It is not showing up in the historic downloads

3) Finally, in Wolfsburg SO2 data, there are 20-25 dates in 2017 and 2018 that have negative values. Could you please explain how should I interpret them?

Many thanks!

Dear Anna,

Thank you for your message and sorry for the delay in replying to your last request.

1) We offer two different API's to access the air quality data, both are based of pre-prepared files for download. We offer two options for download of data; the Direct Download which is only E2a data and only covers the last 48 hours of data (updates every 30 minutes).
URL: http://discomap.eea.europa.eu/[…]/AirQualityUTDExport.htm

The alternative option covers both E1a and E2a (up-to-date) data. Within this service you will have to select if you are only interested in E2a data (which only covers the current + the previous year) or the officially delivered data (E1a). The latter is delivered in September and this delivery covers the previous year (in September 2019 we received 2018 data), so these data are between 9-21 month delayed. This service offers two different time coverages; last 7 days and one year. The last-7-days option only works when the datasource is E2a.

To extract all PM10 data from Germany covering 2020, use this request:

URL: http://discomap.eea.europa.eu/map/fme/AirQualityExport.htm

2) For 2019, we do not have E1a data, so make sure you select E2a. SO2 data from Wolfsburg in 2019:
This is the file returned: https://ereporting.blob.cor[…]_1_4068_2019_timeseries.csv

3) The negative values are caused by the instrument detection limit. In our viewers, we will normally not show negative values but convert them to 0.

We hope that this will answer your questions.

With kind regards,

Hi team,

Thank you for your answer. I was wondering if you have an email or phone for quicker communication?

Regarding 1), thank you, understood.

2) If you click on the link you send, you will see the below error message:

This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.
The specified blob does not exist. RequestId:0e4ffb8a-401e-006d-7927-018472000000 Time:2020-03-23T15:28:38.5267152Z

Similar situation happens with the other regions and years I listed above. As I have mentioned, I was not able to obtain any of the below data (E2A):
- any Leipzig CO data
- Augsburg SO2 data from 2019 onwards
- Munich SO2 data from 2019 onwards
- any Dresden CO
- Wolfsburg SO2 data for 2019

Sometimes it was the error message I sent above, and sometimes the page would not simply load. Could you please help me with each of those cases?

3) Understood, thank you.

4) I was also wondering if you have a file of mappings of stations to the cities. In the csvs I download, there are no columns of cities but in the download form (http://discomap.eea.europa.eu/map/fme/AirQualityExport.htm) I can select a city so there should be some sort of mapping somewhere on your side, do I understand correct?

Many thanks for your help.

Dear Anna,

Here are our answers.

2) The url is https://fme.discomap.eea.eu[…]Date=&TimeCoverage=Year

We cannot replicate the problem that you report. For us to help, we would need you to share the exact URL you use in your request.

4) We can share a file with the mapping between country code, station code and city. The file contains 13736 records. The city name parameter should be used with care as many stations are not related to a city and the spelling of the city name can vary.

Please send us an email at info(at)eea.europa.eu.

Hi team,

Many thanks for the quick reply.

2) if you click on the .csv file you provide in this link, it will give you exactly that error message as the above.

As for the rest of the blank data, please find the URLs below:

- any Leipzig CO data (empty page):

- Augsburg SO2 data from 2019 onwards (empty page):

- Munich SO2 data from 2019 onwards (empty page):

- any Dresden CO (empty page):

- Wolfsburg SO2 data for 2019 (data appears, but when I click on the .csv file, the same error message as the above appears):

4) Many thanks, I will send the email to you straight away.
