Why does the number of monitoring stations after 2012 in Europe drop so dramatically? Before there is a sharp increase across Europe but after 2012 many states stopped reporting. Why is this the case?

Dear M. 'Merretich',

Thank you for your interest in the European Environment Agency (EEA).

The EEA does not recognize a dramatic drop in water quality monitoring sites after 2012. Can we kindly invite you to be more specific on the drop you refer to?

It is to be noted that the EEA has after 2012 restructured its Waterbase and undertook a cleaning up some of the spatial data, including of the monitoring sites. Furthermore, some data for the years 2013-2017 were not included in the published Waterbase for quality issues or for lack of reporting from EU countries. The EEA will dedicate some efforts this year to ensure better reporting and thus better coverage in Waterbase.

Please contact us via info@eea.europa.eu for future correspondence.

With kind regards,
EEA Enquiry Service
