I wondering what are the definiton of primary treatment, secondary treatment and more stringent treatment for UWWT plants that you can find in informations like in this map[…]/uwwt-plants

I found this; secondary treatment = removal of organic pollution
and more stringent treatment = cover nutrient removal
but is't there any guidlines for how much the removal that has too be done?

And one more question, what differ the definitions above from Secondary treatment, primary treatment and tertiary treatment as you can find in pictures like this one[…]/urban-wastewater-treatment? And can I get any values of the removal for tertiary treatment?

Very greatful for all answers

The definitions of primary, secondary and more stringent treatment are in the directive, which is defined by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for the Environment (DG ENV):[…]/directive_en.htm

The definitions of primary, secondary, tertiary on the second map refer to Eurostat's Water Statistics. These definitions can be found in the manual for the OECD/Eurostat Joint Questionnaire on Inland waters, which also includes removal rates for the classification (see p. 79-80):[…]/OECD_ESTAT_JQ_Manual_version_2_21.pdf

Actual removal rates in tertiary treatment may be higher than the values used for the classification.

Hope this is helpful!

Yes, thank you that was really helpful!
Is there any possibility to get access to the data that is present in the interactive map at[…]/uwwt-plants? The most important information is the coordinates (in that case it don’t exist any GIS-file already) and which kind of treatment that is applied.
I saw that it is possible to get this information by choose a couples of plants and then see the information under “plant selections”. But my wish is to get all the information at the same time and also the possibility for further work with the data.

I see this is a lot of data but maybe there is a database for this that I missed. In the case there is not, is it possible to get in contact to somebody for further information.

Thanks again for a greate help

The dataset is available from Waterbase in the WISE Water data centre:[…]water-treatment-directive-1
The dataset includes coodinates for UWWTPs as well as treatment levels.

Also a Map Layer of UWWTPs can be accessed via EEA Map Services:[…]/MapServer – for instance to be used in “mash-ups” through Eye-on-Earth.

Hope this answers your question.
