Odor control regulations in the EU
Can anyone help gathering information abour odor control regulations inside the EU and its threshold limits? I am quite interested in focusing this issue within the waste management proceses.
thanks in advance.

Hello JLCS,
There are no specific pieces of EU legislation concerning the subject of odours alone as the origin of odours is typically very complicated and involves interactions between different factors.

There are, however, a number of pieces of legislation on air quality that addresses some odours due to the emissions of certain substances, such as sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and ground-level ozone. These are detailed here:

Concerning air pollution emissions coming directly from waste management practices (e.g. landfills and incinerators), legislation addressing some odour-causing substances are listed here:

I hope that this is helpful.

Hi JLCS. I'm afraid the information provided by kobosil is incorrect. There is a range of national, regional and municipal odour regulations in Europe. There is a European standard for odour measurement using dynamic olfactometry too, EN13725. Recently a document was prepared listing the main regulatory documents in the EU, and some countries referring to EN13725, for the CEN/TC264/WG2 Olfactometry working group. I act as convenor, feel free to contact me.

Listing (I hope this fits....)

Thank you so much, tonvanharreveld, because the info all you are sending is being quite helpful.
We are developing a huge Odour study in Madrid city. Right now we are drafting the contents and the methodology, but the final objective is to make a characterization of the molecules involve in the emission (with different waste and water treatment processes) and the ones involve in the inmission (in nearby residential and commercial areas of the city), so probably I would ask you for some more advice.
We can be in touch through linkedin or e-mail:
Thanks again.
kindest regards,

Hi Anton,
Thank you very much for your thorough answer.

I'm Josep Maria from the Barcelona Council (Enviromental Quality Dpt.), just today I'm starting to review the odour subjects in order to improve/upgrade our local enviromental regulations (Ordenanza Municipal). The present regulation says that activities must acomplish the immision odour limits but we don't say which they are. My question are:

Do you have local regulation aboy odours, if afirmative could you give some information (
You say in your note that you are developing a huge Odour study in Madrid city, couls you give me some information about that?

Thanks in advance
