There are no issues about commercial use of CDDA, as countries that do not allow this are filtered out of the public version. However, some countries require that an acknowledge statement be attached when their data is used. We are currently checking up on which countries require such acknowledgement statements, and what the correct wording should be. I will get back to you with this information as soon as possible.

Thank you for an update. Acknowledgement statements (attribution) are exactly the core point of my question, especially regarding data for area of Germany. Please provide an "attribution string" that I can use for data of Germany (I guess it could be a name of German authority from which the data originates).

Germany no longer requires an acknowledgement statement in the context of re-use of the European dataset. The information about this on the EEA website was out of date.

However, if your request only concerns the German data, we would advise that you contact the German country provider directly, as it would then be fair to acknowledge them directly. The German country provider is the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN). The contact person is bettina.dibbern[at]bfn.de.

The general CDDA acknowledgement is as stated on the data download page:

“This information is from the European Common Database on Designated Areas established and managed collaboratively by the European Environment Agency, the UNEP-World Conservation Monitoring Centre and the Council of Europe, based on data provided by national sources.”

We have not been through the entire list of countries yet, so it may be that other countries than Finland and Estonia require a specific statement, but it was no longer the case for Germany and Slovenia. We will keep you posted on this.

We apologize for the delay in getting back to you. The CDDA acknowledgements had to be updated and we needed to gather information for each country.

It is the last paragraph under ”Additional information” that has now been updated as follows:

“Geographical coverage GIS vector boundary data: Albania, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Great Britain, Greece, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland. EEA does not have permission to distribute some or all sites reported by Austria, Bulgaria, Estonia, Ireland, Malta, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain and Turkey.
